WSU Game

We went to Pullman on the Cougar Mania vendor bus again this year. Got to the hospitality tents - they were serving breakfast, but closer to the game served sausages & chili. We checked out the Bookie and then headed to the field before the game. Beautiful weather for a football game! Sunny & bright. In fact, when we were on the field for the coin toss, I actually wished I had a short sleeve shirt on and I definitely needed my sunglasses. We usually head straight up to the private suite, but frankly because it was so nice, we ended up sitting in the bleachers for most of the game. Audrey and Mariska stayed in the suite the whole time though. I think they liked the free ice cream bars. Too bad the score was so pathetic!! 50 USC to 16 WSU was the final score.

The Fair

We took our annual jaunt to the Interstate Fair. The weather was wonderful! We tried something a little different this year by ordering one food item and sharing it (started with gyros) and then walking around and looking at displays. Then we were going to order another main dish item but ended up just going straight to dessert (funnel cake with berries). In the past we each have ordered something and ended up either throwing some of it away because we were too full or, worse, finishing it all so we didn't waste our money. Our plan this year worked much better for our waistline (and less $'s too).

Blackberry Cobbler

Our blackberries were very plentiful this year. Besides just eating them off the vine, we made all sorts of yummy treats. We tried a new recipe for Blackberry Cobbler and were not disappointed.


BLACKBERRY COBBLER
Filling:
6 cups blackberries
1/3 cup sugar
1 Tbs. flour
1 tsp. grated lemon zest
Pinch of salt
Topping:
1 & 1/4 cups flour
1/3 cup sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1 egg
1/2 cup buttermilk
3/4 stick unsalted butter, melted and cooled
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Preheat an oven to 375ºF. Lightly grease a 2-quart baking dish.

Filling: Gently toss the berries in a bowl with the sugar, flour, lemon zest and salt until blended. Pour into the prepared baking dish.

Topping: Stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. In another bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, butter and vanilla until well blended. Pour the egg mixture into the flour mixture and, using a rubber spatula, fold gently until the flour is moistened and the mixture forms a soft dough.

Drop heaping spoonfuls of the dough onto the fruit. Bake until the filling is bubbling, the topping is browned and a toothpick inserted into the topping comes out clean, about 45 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature. Serves 8 to 10.

Last 1st Day of School

Today was Audrey's "last first day of school". We always take a picture on The Rock, so had to do that for her last time. I cannot believe she is a Senior!

Asphault Repair and Seal

My pavement was looking pretty pathetic. There was a corner that was buckling due to the tree roots growing under that area. There was another edge that got broken off from a heavy duty delivery truck a few years back. And we had not seal coated it for a few years. So we hired a company to fix a few areas of the driveway and seal coat. It sure looked great when we got home that evening!

Pickup window

John joined others from our church to "Paint the Town". He took his tall ladder with him and spent a few hours painting a house. When he got home he was unhooking the bungee cord when he lost a grip on it and it smacked right into the back window on his pickup truck.

While cleaning up the glass inside the truck and in the bed of the truck, some had gotten onto the driveway. So John went out there with the shop vac. He said I should take a picture of him vacumning the driveway....

He was able to get it fixed and ended up getting a slider window instead (less expensive). That will be nice in the summer since his truck does not have A/C.

Fridge

John woke up to get a late night snack and smelled something burning. When he opened the fridge, he realized it was the interior light. When he closed the door he could see that the light would not turn off.


We bought the refrigerator back in 2005 from Sears, so it was not longer under warranty. However, they came and fixed the fridge for FREE putting in a new monitor that will automatically power the light off if it has been on for a number of minutes or hits a certain temp. The parts alone were $500, but 100% covered. Yeah for Sears!!
