Independence Day

PATRIOTIC LAYERED DRINK
Choose 2-3 drinks with different sugar content for the layers (for example: 30g sugar, 15g sugar, 0g sugar). Fill cup with ice all the way to the top. Pour the drink with the highest sugar contest into the cup, filling it approximately one third full. For the second layer, pour the second drink with the lower sugar contest slowly through the ice to fill up to 2/3rd of the glass. Finally, pour the sugar-free or lowest sugar drink slowly through the ice until you've reached the top of the glass. Suggested: Sobe Pina Colada, Gatorade Fruit Punch, G2 Blueberry-Pomegranate). We did not find those choices at the store so went with Big Red, Big Blue and Sobe Pina Colada. The blue and red worked great, but once we added the white - it kind of lost the layers (we were trying hard to not pick a sugar-free option).

Mom had everyone to her house at 4pm for dinner. We brought the cake pops that Cheyenne and I had made, plus we made a Red/White/Blue fruit salad. Finding the red (watermelon) and blue (blueberries) was easy. Finding a "white" melon was hard, but we picked up a Canary melon and it worked great.

John brought some rockets to play with after dinner - that entertained the group for quite awhile. Then we headed home and watched "Independence Day" with Will Smith - a great patriotic movie!!

Ornament Shopping

Grandma, Michelle, Cheyenne, Mariska, Tyler, Audrey and I went on our annual ornament shopping today at Old World Christmas factory outlet store. It was very busy!! After choosing our ornaments we probably stood in line for 30 minutes, though we did have a fascinating conversation with a couple in line with us. Where we spent $24 for our ornaments, this couple had well over $200 (or more) in ornaments. This is an outlet store where all the ornaments are $4 a piece... Audrey picked out a dinosaur, a cougar and a mountain goat. I got a camper, a carousel, a bunny, a snowflake and a reindeer. Afterwards we went to Denny's and had lunch (or in Audrey's case - breakfast).

Projects at Mom's

We kind of took over a few things at mom's house this summer. Not sure she really knew how much upheaval it would cause when she first agreed to it - sorry! I wanted to move her movies into one area (from the living room to her bedroom). John built some shelves around her bedroom window and we moved them all there. I also wanted all her books to be in one area. She had some in her bedroom and in a few other locations, so we moved them all into her library. And then when we were looking at her stairway, we offered to peel the wallpaper and paint. So basically we had her home in the midst of projects from the end of May until a high school class reunion she had scheduled for the first part of August. It finally got done with a ton of work from everyone. Definitely a team effort!

Mom's Birthday

Today was mom's 73rd birthday so we made some lime cupcakes (from a cake mix) and took them up to her hours. I did make a homemade Key Lime Frosting as I think homemade frosting is the best. Happy Birthday Mom!

Key Lime Frosting
8 TB butter, softened
8 ounce cream cheese, softened
2 TB key lime juice
1 teaspoon key lime zest
4-5 cups confectioners' sugar
Cream butter, cream cheese, juice and zest with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add 4 cups confectioners' sugar, one cup at a time; continue beating until light and fluffy. If icing is too thin add additional confectioners' sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time.

4th of July

Went to mom's for her annual 4th of July party. She has done an open invitation every year, but we never know who is going to show up or how many to plan for. Sometimes there are a ton of people but today it ended up only being our family, mom, Shaune's family and the Cliffords. It was a nice group - but we've decided mom will make specific invitations from now on so we know how many to expect, can make some type of food assignments and can adjust the plans if the weather changes. We made a macaroni casserole, corn salad, jello and a cake. Have to experiment with the patriotic dishes! We did not take many pictures, which was weird. So here you go...

Last Symphony

Tonight mom and I went to the Spokane Symphony performance of "Pirates of Penzance" by the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players. It was a fun performance and enjoyable to listen to some of the songs I've heard over the years such as "Poor Wandering One!" and "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General". Unfortunately, I was so very, very tired I was doing the head-bob and sleep-while-sitting-up thing during the entire second act. This is our last regular attendance to the symphony as we are not renewing for the 2013-2014 season. We have been season subscribers for a number of years but were not as excited about the upcoming season as normal so decided to cut back. We've enjoyed it over the years. Actually had started volunteering at the ticket office when I was pregnant with Audrey (1993) so have either volunteered or been season subscribers for about 20 years.

Movie and Symphony

Audrey wanted to see Les Mis again, so went with Laura F and Angela H to the movie today.  And then later that evening, Mom and I went to the Spokane Pops Symphony concert. Pink Martini was the guest artist. They are a 12-piece group out of Portland, Oregon, that crosses various genres (classical, jazz, pop) and multiple cultures (French, Turkish, Japanese, etc). So the music tonight was rather eclectic. We enjoyed some numbers more than others. And I think the concert was sold out. They are quite popular but honestly, I probably would not have chosen to attend if they were not playing with the symphony.

Mom's Birthday

Worked out plans with Michelle to have dinner and dessert for mom's birthday. I made a batch of patriotic red velvet cupcakes with homemade blue cream cheese frosting. Michelle handled the hot dogs and chips.

Mom opening her present from us. This is the one we had purchased on our Canada road trip.

Evidently purple was the color scheme for the party - I missed the memo!!

Titanic Symphony

Tonight the Spokane Symphony performed under the direction of Eckart Preu. The theme was The Titanic and they chose songs from the time period. During one of the songs they had photos showing the Titanic 'before' and 'after' (under water wreckage footage). A fun twist to this concert was when Eckart sat down and played the piano for a couple of numbers (Maple Leaf Rag and Glow Worm). So not only an accomplished conductor but a accomplished pianist as well. He shared some Spokane ties to the Titanic, which was interesting to hear these stories. They, of course, performed "Nearer, My God, to Thee" but it was slightly less traditional arrangement and I did not like it as well as the traditional one you would hear in church. And they performed the music from the movie "Titanic" as well. Good concert!

Symphony: Ann Hampton Callaway

Tonight mom and I went to the Symphony where Ann Hampton Callaway performed numbers by Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart and Stephen Sondheim. In addition, since it was St Patrick's Day, we heard Danny Boy and she did a St Patrick's Day improvisation number.

You might recognize her from the theme song to the TV series "The Nanny". She both sang the number and wrote it. She is a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host and producer.
THE NANNY

She was working in a bridal shop in Flushing, Queens,
Til her boyfriend kicked her out in one of those crushing scenes.
What was she to do, where was she to go
She was out on her fanny.

So over the bridge from Flushing to the Sheffield's door,
She was there to sell make up but the father saw more,
She had style, she had flair, she was there,
That' how she became the Nanny.

Symphony: Riders in the Sky

Mom and I went to the Symphony. They were joined by Riders In the Sky - a Cowboy band consisting of a fiddle, accordion, guitar, bass plus vocals. For 30 years Riders In The Sky have been singing tunes made famous by Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. They sang numbers such as Yellow Rose of Texas, Red River Valley, Back In the Saddle Again and Happy Trails. You might recognize them from their performance of Woody's Round Up in Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc. - Scream Factory Favorites.

Here are the words to a popular cowboy poem that they performed during the concert on Saturday. The poem was written by Wally McRae, a Montana rancher.

REINCARNATION

What is reincarnation? The Cowpoke asked his friend
His pal replied it happens when your life has reached its end
They comb your hair and wash your neck and clean your fingernails
And lay you in a padded box away from life's travails
And the box then goes in a hole that's been dug in the ground
And reincarnation starts in when you're planted neath the mound
Then clods melt down, just like the box, and you who is inside
And then you're just beginning on your transformation ride
Meanwhile the grass will grow upon your rendered mound
And soon upon your lonely grave a single flower is found
And then a horse will wonder by and graze upon flower
That once was you and now become your vegetated bower
The posie that the horse done eat along with his other feed
Makes bone and fat and muscle essential to the steed
But some is left that he can't use and so it passes thru
And finally lays upon the ground this thing that once was you
And say by chance I wanders by, and sees this on the ground
And I ponders and wonders at this object that I've found
And I thinks of reincarnation and life and death and such
And I come away concluding you ain't changed all that much.

Christmas Eve

We had our annual breakfast-for-dinner at Grandma Gramlow's house. We made Davenport Coffee Cake. Other items on the menu included scrambled eggs, bacon, orange juice, eggnog and the McMackin's made waffles. After (breakfast) dinner we cleaned up the dishes and the kids sorted the presents. We wait until all the presents are passed out and then we can open them at once. But we then go around the room and everyone gets a chance to "Show and Tell" what they received and who gave them what. We also draw names, so each person brings one gift and receives one gift - but we all get Grandma a gift and she gives us a gift.

Mom got me the Lion House Cakes & Cupcakes book and made a "nest" necklace. Dakota had my name this year and gave me a Vanilla Bean hand soap set from Bath & Body Works, some Plum Jam and Ferrero chocolates. John received a huge jar of pistachios from mom and a blue solid dress shirt from Brian. Audrey received the Madagascar II soundtrack, a pirates book and a large assortment of Coca-Cola dishes from Grandma. She received a family pack of Oreos and a pirate blanket from Shaune. We were able to give gifts to Kathy (a cookbook), Cameron (Lego Hero Factory) and Dakota (Star Wars items).

There is a crazy story about the Star Wars items... Dakota had hinted that he liked the Star Wars popcorn tins. There were 4 different ones. I asked mom to pick up 2 for me while she was getting 2 for her to give - - so he would end up with all 4 patterns. Well, evidently mom was busy so sent Michelle on the errand. When they delivered the 2 tins to my house, Dakota was in the van so they sent him inside. Audrey was home and said Dakota dropped them off and said "These are for Aunt Sam". That's pretty bad when you deliver your own Christmas gift AND think it is for someone else!

Below is a picture (left to right) of James, Dakota, Cameron, Mariska, Brianna, Cheyenne & Audrey. They sure are growing up! Note the pictures in the background? Right beside Mariska's head is "me" and just to the right of Brianna's head is Kathy's baby picture.

ALTON BROWN'S BASIC WAFFLE RECIPE
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
3 TB sugar
3 whole eggs, beaten
2 oz unsalted butter, melted
16 oz buttermilk

In a medium bowl whisk together flour, soda, baking powder, salt and sugar. In another bowl beat together eggs and melted butter, and then add buttermilk. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir until combined. Allow to rest for 5 minutes. Preheat waffle iron, ladle recommended batter on iron, close top and cook until golden on both sides. Serve immediately.

Holiday Pops

Went with mom to the Holiday Pops with the Spokane Symphony. Music for the evening included numbers by the Spokane Symphony Chorale and the Spokane Area Children's Chorus. The concert started with a jazzy medley on snow - "Let It Snow", "Winter Wonderland" and "Jingle Bells". My favorite new number was "Reindeer Variations" by Lucas Richman, but I also enjoyed "We Three Basses" by James Stephenson. And of course no Holiday Pops concert is complete without Santa directing the symphony on Sleigh Ride. But finally, there is always a Christmas carol sing-along.

Nutcracker

Audrey went to the Nutcracker with Grandma Gramlow, Mariska, and Cheyenne. It was the first time that Audrey saw the State Street Ballet version. It was held at the Fox Theater and featured the Spokane Symphony. Some artistic licensing made this performance a little different for Audrey, such as instead of the Mouse King there was a Mouse Queen. She also mentioned the costuming was less dramatic then past productions she has attended. Afterwards, they all went to Cheyenne's choice of the Timber Creek Buffet! They had a fun girl's afternoon together. Thanks Grandma for planning this event!!

Grandma's Floor

John and Shaune worked on mom's kitchen floor installing bamboo in the kitchen and entryway stairs. Above is a during photo and below is a finished photo. Doesn't it look nice? Shaune then did the same flooring in his house.

Symphony: Frank Sinatra Jr

Went to the symphony with mom tonight. The first half of the night the orchestra played big band numbers under the direction of Dan Keberle. The second half Frank Sinatra Jr performed many familiar numbers (New York, New York; One for My Baby; My Way). It was an enjoyable evening.

Symphony with Mom

Mom and I went to the final concert of the Spokane Symphony Pops season tonight: The Brubeck Brothers. They played a few numbers such as "Take Five" that their father, Dave, made famous. He was known for playing with non-traditional timing such as 5/4 or 7/8 time. They also played some traditional jazz numbers and then some eclectic type jazz numbers. It was a nice evening - thanks mom!

Mom Featured in the LDS Sentinal

By Craig Howard, News EditorShare: April 25, 2011 — Jacquie Gramlow has always paid attention to detail, going back to the days when she was a junior at Mead High School and began working as a bookkeeper for a local housepainting company.

Over five decades later, Gramlow still maintains a meticulous approach to numbers as the owner/operator of Grannie's Bookkeeping Service.

"I appreciate bookkeeping as an exact science," Gramlow said. "You know that two and two will equal four, not five."

Gramlow took subjects like typing, shorthand and bookkeeping in high school before receiving a scholarship to Kenman Business College in Spokane to study bookkeeping. Over the years, she has monitored the books for a variety of companies, including those run by her late husband, David, who passed away in 2008.

Jacquie Gramlow brings over five decades of experience to her self-owned company, Grannie's Bookkeeping Service. A longtime resident of the Bigelow Gulch area, Gramlow is a public notary and specializes in programs like Quickbooks, Peachtree, Microsoft Excel, Access and Word. Photo by Craig Howard.

Whether maintaining a carrot crop on 180 acres in the Bigelow Gulch area of north Spokane or selling pellet stoves through an original venture called Techniflame (which now specializes in RV and boat storage), David and Jacquie made a stellar team. The couple was married for 47 years. Their family includes four children and seven grandchildren.

Jacquie was born in southern Idaho and lived in Utah with her family for a short time before they moved to the Spokane area when she was 5. Along with a series of vast transitions to the local landscape, Gramlow has seen numerous changes to her career field, beginning with dramatic improvements in technology.

From the pre-carbon copy days of maintaining a bookkeeping ledger by hand to working with contemporary programs like Quickbooks, Gramlow said her work has become easier and more efficient over time. With a grasp of the latest in high-tech systems, she now specializes in helping companies as a bookkeeping consultant.

"It's really changed a lot," she said. "I remember a time when everything was done in ink."

Gramlow recalls the first computer her husband brought home in the mid-1980s. The device may have made bookkeeping easier but it was not about to win any awards for aesthetic value.

"It wasn't quite as big as the original IBM computers, but it was a monster," Gramlow said.

The stereotypical stress of tax season is something that Gramlow anticipates and deals with - pragmatically - each year. Part of her secret to dealing with anxiety is typical of her business strategy - remaining cool and calm while addressing tasks with a step-by-step approach.

"It's work that has to be done," she said. "I've been handed a shoebox of receipts before and told someone has an audit coming up. My job is to get things on the right track."

A public notary, Gramlow specializes in what is known as "full charge bookkeeping," including payroll, bank reconciliation and financial reports. She also organizes prevailing and non-prevailing state and federal reports on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.

A member of the 15th Ward in the Spokane Valley Stake, Gramlow recalls a time when the Spokane Stake encompassed a sprawling region that included parts of Idaho and Montana and areas north to the Canadian border. Decades before the Spokane - or Seattle - Temples, church members would travel to the Cardston, Alberta Temple.

"I think sometimes people take the growth of the Church here for granted," Gramlow said. "It's really been amazing."

Mother/Daughter Brunch and Symphony

Today Audrey and I went to the Senior Laurel's Mother & Daughter Brunch at the Stake Center. This was put on my the Stake Relief Society to welcome all new seniors into Relief Society, either when they turned 18 or when they graduated. It was a wonderful program. We started by having brunch: A Waffle Bar! There was a delicious syrup served that we will have to try at home. Then they had a short program. The theme was "The Snowball Effect" and the room was decorated in silvers and blues. The first speaker (Letha Adams) spoke about how you need a good base of snow to enjoy skiing, and she suggested that our base is something we should always be working on. Then Stacy Julian spoke and shared how the Mommy Blogs are popular with non-LDS folks because we seem happy and with it. But we actually are happy and with it because we know about the gospel. Then Whitney Gummersall concluded. I sure love her! She is so "real" and I made it very interesting for the seniors to want to join the "club"! She talked about how it does not matter what your age is - we have friends in Relief Society who are 25 and 75. And it is a wonderful sisterhood to belong to. Then we did a service project for the Ronald McDonald House before heading home. Look what they made each girl - a SnowBall Ornament:
That evening mom and I had tickets to the symphony - Rodgers and Hammerstein music sung by vocalists Teri Hansen and Nat Chandler. They entered the theatre from the back and stopped to shake hands with audience members, including me because I always have the aisle seat. Fun night listening to music from Carousel, State Fair, The King and I, South Pacific, Sound of Music and Oklahoma!
